Our work
WHO ARE WE
We are an environmental fund
We are an environmental fund that has been operating since 2021 in the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo and in the Mesoamerican Reef System, the second largest barrier reef in the world shared by Mexico, Honduras, Belize, and Guatemala.
We aim to achieve a more sustainable and resilient Mexican southeast through financing and promoting socio-environmental initiatives, projects, collaborations, and comprehensive and impactful actions that make a significant difference.
Lines of action
Conservation and restoration of marine, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems
We channel resources towards innovative projects and programs for the conservation, regeneration, protection and recovery of the region's biodiversity and ecosystems, led by change agents in collaboration with or as representatives of local communities.
Collaboration with organized groups for the development of sustainable livelihoods
We work with local communities to sustainably exploit natural resources to improve their livelihoods, strengthen value chains and reduce regional inequalities.
Capacity building
We strengthen the skills and leadership of change agents (individuals, civil society organizations and organized groups) who work on socio-environmental projects in the region to increase the sustainability and reach of their initiatives.
Promotion of strategic alliances
We coordinate spaces for networking and knowledge exchange between strategic actors to promote the creation of alliances and collaborative solutions that enable addressing the challenges of the region.
Projects and programs
At Sureste Sostenible, A.C., we are convinced that conservation and sustainable development are fundamental to our communities' well-being and our planet's future. Our team comprises passionate and committed individuals, who combine their experience and knowledge to face the most urgent environmental challenges.
Leadership Program in the Mesoamerican Reef System
Launched in January 2010 by the Mexican Fund for Nature Conservation with the support of the Summit Foundation, the Program seeks to accelerate conservation impacts in the MAR ecoregion by developing the capacities and empowering the leadership of change agents in the region to design and implement high-impact conservation projects, providing them with mentoring, leadership tools, and the opportunity to connect through work networks.
Kanan Kay Alliance
Intersectoral collaboration initiative created in 2011 with the original objective of establishing an effective network of fishing refuge zones that protect the waters of the Mexican Caribbean territorial sea and contribute to the recovery of artisanal fisheries that are overexploited.
Kaanbal Suut
Kaanbal Suut is an initiative created in 2021 by the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN) with the support of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Its objective is to strengthen the capacities, leadership and networking opportunities of organized groups that lead socio-environmental projects in the Yucatan Peninsula to promote the advancement of environmental impacts at a regional and strategic level.
