Our work
WHO ARE WE
Empowering Sustainability Through Environmental Funding
Since 2021, Sureste Sostenible has operated as an environmental fund across Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, as well as the Mesoamerican Reef System—the world’s second-largest barrier reef, shared by Mexico, Honduras, Belize, and Guatemala.
Our mission is to foster a more sustainable and resilient southeastern Mexico by financing and promoting impactful socio-environmental initiatives, collaborative projects, and strategic actions that drive meaningful change.

Lines of action

Conservation and restoration of marine, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems
We invest in innovative projects and programs that focus on conserving, restoring, and protecting the region’s biodiversity and ecosystems, led by change agents working with or representing local communities.

Collaboration with organized groups for the development of sustainable livelihoods
We work with local communities to manage natural resources sustainably, improve livelihoods, strengthen value chains, and reduce regional inequalities.

Capacity building
We enhance the skills and leadership capacity of change agents—including individuals, civil society organizations, and community groups—who lead socio-environmental projects, improving the sustainability and impact of their work.

Promotion of strategic alliances
We create networking and knowledge-sharing platforms for key stakeholders to foster strategic alliances and collaborative solutions that address the region’s most pressing challenges.
Proyects and programs
Sureste Sostenible A.C. leads various projects and programs aimed at advancing sustainability and resilience in southeastern Mexico and the Mesoamerican Reef System. Our initiatives include conservation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable livelihoods, capacity building, and strategic partnerships. By working closely with local communities, change agents, and partners, we guarantee the effectiveness and impact of our projects.
Mesoamerican Reef Leadership Program
Launched in January 2010 by the Mexican Fund for Nature Conservation with the support of the Summit Foundation, this program aims to accelerate conservation impacts in the MAR ecoregion by developing the capacities and empowering the leadership of change agents in the region to design and implement high-impact conservation projects. It provides them with mentoring, leadership tools, and opportunities to connect through work networks.

Kanan Kay Alliance
Intersectoral collaboration initiative created in 2011 with the original objective of establishing an effective network of fishing refuge zones that protect the waters of the Mexican Caribbean territorial sea and contribute to the recovery of artisanal fisheries that are overexploited.

Kaanbal Suut
Kaanbal Suut is an initiative created in 2021 by the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN) with the support of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Its objective is to strengthen the capacities, leadership and networking opportunities of organized groups that lead socio-environmental projects in the Yucatan Peninsula to promote the advancement of environmental impacts at a regional and strategic level.
